Lapis lazuli, known as "Sapphirus" in ancient Greece, was known as "a blue stone with gold veins inside". The purest and highest quality Lapis Lazuli is mined in the form of veins and lenses in white marble in Badakhshan, Afghanistan. These mines, which are among the oldest in the world, also provided Lapis Lazuli to the Pharaohs in ancient times.
In ancient Egypt, Lapis Lazuli was one of the indispensable materials for ornaments, amulets and precious jewelry. Lapis Lazuli was used as a seal by the Assyrians and Babylonians, and during archaeological excavations in Egypt, Lapis jewelry dating back to the pre-royal period was found in the Nakada region, a settlement in 3300-3100 BC. It is also known that powdered Lapis was used as eye shadow by ancient Egyptian women.
As written in the chapters of the Book of the Dead, Lapis Lazuli placed in a golden case in the shape of an eye was considered a powerful talisman. It was believed that the wearer would be protected from evil after an offering was made to this symbolic eye on the last day of each month. More than 6,000 bird and deer statuettes, as well as numerous plates, jewelry and seals made of Lapis Lazuli were found in the ancient Sumerian royal tombs of Ur, located near the Euphrates River. Lapis Lazuli is described in many Sumerian and Akkadian texts as a stone of richness and magnificence worthy of kings. The Romans believed that Lapis was a powerful aphrodisiac. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that Lapis had a beneficial effect on health and that it purified the soul from sin, jealousy and fear.
